NDP member of Parliament Pat Martin is taking on Ronald McDonald. The MP from the Winnipeg core said yesterday he wants to "guilt" McDonald's Restaurants of Canada into eliminating the use of trans fats in its restaurants. Martin said he plans to go after McDonald's with "both barrels" blazing during a hearing of a standing committee on health in Ottawa today. Richard Ellis, McDonald's vice-president of communications and public affairs, will be at that public hearing, which has been called to deal with a Liberal private member's bill that would require the fast-food restaurants to post calorie counts on menu boards.
