- May 21/04, Winnipeg Free Press: "MP takes anti-fat crusade to the movies"

June 3, 2004

NEW Democrat MP Pat Martin took his crusade to ban trans fats to the Winnipeg premier of the critically acclaimed film Super Size Me, which opened last night at the Grant ParkCinema. Martin is promoting a private members bill that would ban food products containing trans fats in Canada. A similar law exists in Denmark.

Martin said he wanted to take advantage of the documentary film's theme -- fast food is bad for you -- to promote his private members bill and to alert Canadians to the health dangers of trans fats.

The film's director went on a one-month McDonald's binge, eating nothing but McDonalds three times a day. He gained a pound a day and his doctor said his cholesterol, blood sugar and triglyceride levels skyrocketed.

Martin circulated a petition asking film goers to endorse his campaign.
