- Feb. 18/04: Press Release- Pat Martin Submits Motion to Review Governor General's Spending

January 19, 2005

NDP MP Pat Martin has presented a motion for the consideration of the Parliamentary Committee overseeing government expenditures, requesting that the Governor General's spending be reviewed to determine if the public has been getting the best return.

"I, Pat Martin MP for Winnipeg Centre, move that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates undertake a study and review of the Budget and Estimates of the office of the Governor General and the spending of any other department or agency in support of the officer of the Governor General, for the purposes of determining if the spending patterns of the Office of the Governor General are in keeping with:

a) the mandate of the Governor General, and

b) the wishes and expectations of the Canadian public."

The OGGO Committee was asked to address the Governor General's spending "at the earliest opportunity".

The Winnipeg Centre MP was involved in a previous review of the GG's circumpolar tour, but was disappointed that all information about the expenditures were not presented at the time.
