- May 5/04, The Ottawa Citizen: "National: MDs in Senate back ban on trans fat in food"

January 15, 2005

The Senate's two highly respected cardiologists, Liberal Yves Morin and Tory Wilbert Keon, are endorsing a bill from NDP MP Pat Martin that would virtually ban all trans fats from foods, other than the trace amounts that occur naturally. Currently, the government has ordered mandatory labelling of trans fat content by 2006. Research has shown that trans fat is more dangerous than other types of fats in contributing to heart disease and limits the positive health effects of consuming 'good' fats. Trans fat is often used to increase shelf life.
