- May 5/04, The Province: "Senators jump on MP's anti-fat bandwagon"

January 15, 2005

OTTAWA -- Liberal Sen. Yves Morin and Tory Sen. Wilbert Keon, both cardiologists, have joined forces in a battle to have trans fats in food virtually banned.

They say they will endorse a bill from NDP MP Pat Martin that would allow only the trace amounts of the fats that occur naturally.

Trans fats are used primarily in processed foods to increase shelf life. They limit the positive health effects of consuming "good" fats.

Neither Health Canada nor the Liberal government supports a ban.
