Anne MacClelland's labelling proposal does not come soon enough or go far enough. Let's show that we can do the right thing for our children NOW! |

As a Holistic Nutritionist I know how damaging these fats are to our overall health. It would be good to have them eliminated from our food supply. |

The following is from my up-coming book, WHO'S THE QUACK? You might find this small excerpt interesting.
HARD WHITE FAT
My wife and I were watching a Waterless Cookware demonstration at the Homeshow at the CNE in fall, 2003. During the show, the hawker, Doris, put a dab of lard on her wrist. Her point was that you should not cook with grease or any other form of fat because the substance ends up in your venous system (heart, arteries and veins). What she said was that the lard would not become liquid, and thus flow until it (the lard) was heated to 105F. Conversely, once you ingest that same grease and it cools down to body temperature, it reverts back to that hard white grease wherever it is in your body at the time and becomes unusable. Worse than unusable, what ever you don't happen to pass in a subsequent bowel movement becomes a coating on the interior walls of your veins and so on. It stays there until you heat it up to 105. When was the last time you heated yourself up to 105 degrees? Ever? Didn't think so. You'd be dead. So it's safe to say that unless you were already or have become a vegetarian and followed the timeless concepts outlined in my Health Restoration posts, you have Heart Disease. That's because you're still carrying around that white fat from every red meat and processed food meal you've ever eaten. That's how very fit people can die of a heart attack. Just because they are vegetarians doesn't mean they have avoided eating white fat. In fact, they can be worse off than the general population because of the amount of flour and pasta they eat that is prepared using white fat. Need for instance? Piecrusts, apple turnovers, donuts, Danish pastries, cookies, the list goes on.
There are only two ways of getting rid of that hard white fat. The first is to have an operation where they chop your rib cage in half to open you up, go into your veins and scrape them clean. This is very inefficient and does not remove anything from other areas of your body.
The second way is to adopt a healthy lifestyle, cut out all sources of white fat, increase the (raw) vegetable content of your diet. Buy a juice machine and start using it and get plenty of regular exercise to get your blood flowing to carry the dissolving fat out of your tissues.
The second way is more fun and leaves no scars. The second way will also help you qualify for life insurance.
So the next time you are in the kitchen to prepare a meal, put some lard on the top of your wrist where you can see it. Leave it there until it either disappears or you scrape it off at the end of the evening. It will give your family and friends something to thing about as they chow down. You might also tell them that the dab is about the size of the amount of white fat they ingest in a typical day. And how long have they been doing this for? |

I agree that merely labelling a harmful ingredient is insufficient, as many people do not recognize the various names that trans fats might go by, or are unaware of the problems they cause. Also, merely labelling assumes that we all have a choice. Many people can't read, do not understand, or perhaps cannot afford to choose what they eat the way some of us can. In many cases it may be even more important that these individuals are getting nutricious meals, especially the children. |
