The science is clear - hydrogenated fats are a health hazard. Absent a few notable positive changes (kudos to Voortmans and "goldfish crackers") the food industry is reluctant to stop poisoning our kids (not to mention their parents who can thank food manufacturers for several decades of arterial plaque). Government regulation is clearly required. If Denmark can do it, so can we. Let's move on this NOW! |

The first reaction may be "well, don't buy those products that contain trans-fats". But I can't even buy soda biscuits, cereals or my favourite crackers without stumbling on trans-fats, even when they are obscured with language like "partially hydrongenated" (which, I believe, is like partially pregnant), or "vegetable oil shortening". While I sympathize with shelf-life issues for manufacturers, there must be a way to eliminate trans-fats (and BHT, please) from foods like breakfast cereals. I bought a General Mills cereal which claimed "0 gr. of trans-fats", but on the other side it quite plainly read "hydrongenated soya bean oil". How does this work?
I do not buy margerine, cheap oils or shortening because I trust cows and olive trees more than chemists. I buy fresh and frozen vegetables and meats. Still, in almost everything packaged, there lurk trans-fats, sometimes unashamedly disguised.
Though better labelling will go a long way, elimination is desirable. |

Trans Fats are costing the Canadian Health Care System tons of money. If government wants to make health care sustainable they should take proactive measures that will cut costs to the system in the long run... such as banning trans fats. Keep up the good work Pat Martin |

Eliminating trans fats would protect those most vulnerable - our children. Their food choices are made mostly by their parents and as such their health is dependent upon their parent's knowledge or lack thereof. Eliminating trans fats would ensure that they never become part of their daily diet. |

I work for Kraft Canada and I am also a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. I would like nothing more for Trans fats to be banned. That way there would be no choice but to change the ingredients of the most damaging products(cookies, sauces etc.) This would be the greatest thing for the health of our country. I feel that companies knowingly putting trans fats in products should be fined with malicious intent. |

It is so hard to believe that the same food we eat to live is slowly killing us. |

It's rediculous and unacceptable that hydrogenated oils are in so many foods. Inlcuding baby foods, so called healthy cereals, puddings, crackers even whole grain ones, and granola bars. It's getting more and more difficult to feed my family without being forced to consume some trans fats. The Institute of Medicine suggests that no amount of trans fats are safe. Yet the average Canadian is getting no less then 10 grams day???? What is this going to do to our already weak Medical systom??? |

Removing this and cigarettes would save our health care system in the long run. Thanks for your efforts. |

Although I do not live in Canada, I am hoping that with more countries banning trans fat in food, my country will be pressured to follow suit. It is absurd that something so toxic should be allowed for consumption and so widely available. And I am horrified by all the years I have been taking margarine, with the belief that I am eating healthier. I feel cheated and hope that something like this will not happen again. |
